The Kingdom of God Devotional Guide - Thursday, April 7

Scripture Reading: Isaiah 60

Review and Explanation: This chapter is just one of many OT passages that speak of glorious conditions for Israel during the reign of her Messiah here on the earth. Keep in mind these conditions require the physical presence of the Messiah Himself. In the case of Isaiah 60, the physical presence of the Messiah is promised near the beginning, in verse 2: "the Lord will arise upon you."

Isaiah 60 indicates that in the Kingdom of the Messiah (the promised Virgin-born, Savior King we've already written so much about), Jerusalem will become the economic, political, and religious center of the world. For example, in 60:6-7, the prophecy describes peoples coming to Jerusalem over land routes bringing with them "the praises of the Lord". In 60:8-9, they come to Jerusalem over sea routes with "flocks" for sacrifice on the Lord's altar. This marks an amazing transformation, since the peoples mentioned do not presently have anything to do with worshiping Jehovah. In fact, they are predominantly Muslim.

The text mentions several people groups specifically. "Midian" was the son of Abraham by his wife, Keturah. "Ephah" was a tribe of Midian. "Seba" was a descendant of Ham through Cush. "Kedar" and "Nebaioth" were also descendants of Abraham, but through Ishmael. So altogether, these references indicate both Semites from outside of Israel and Hamites will radically change their religious orientation to embrace the worship of Jehovah when the promised Messiah, Deliverer-King is present in Jerusalem, ruling in His kingdom.

Descendants of the third son of Noah, Japheth, appear to be represented also. 60:9-10 mention "the ships of Tarshish" bringing "your children from afar, their silver and gold with them". Don't miss how this too is characterized as a wonderful transformation of the people's attitude toward Israel's Lord and King. Whereas these same nations once were enemies, now they assist Jewish people with their return and they bring their own wealth with them as gifts "for the name of the Lord your God, and for the Holy One of Israel, because he has made you beautiful".

Reflection Questions:
1. Two passages of Scripture, one in the OT and one in NT, both speak of this time in terms of "every knee bowing" and "every tongue confessing". Read Isaiah 45:23 and Philippians 2:5-11. What is your heart telling you to do in response to the Lord right now?
