I recently saw a program on TV hosted by Roger Moore that went into some of the extra-canonical history and legend about Jesus' birth and travels to and from Egypt. They visited churches that were built along the likely route. http://www.associatedtelevision.com/programs.php?id=181
In it there is a suggestion that young Jesus and his earthly parents were helped on their journey by the penitent thief that was hanged next to Jesus. It was a very interesting program.
